Professional Development Awards

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures offers Professional Development Awards to qualified undergraduates who are enrolled full-time at KU and have declared a German Studies major or minor. The awards assist students pursuing educational opportunities related to German Studies such as study abroad programs, research projects, conference presentations, internships, and service programs. Awards are for $250 or $500.

The Undergraduate Studies Committee evaluates applications based on a student’s academic record and the extent to which the educational opportunity will enrich his or her German Studies major or minor. The Committee will also consider the length of the study abroad program, internship, research or conference trip, or service project. German Studies majors and minors may receive more than one Professional Development Award, but priority will be given to applicants who have not already received a grant.

Students may apply for a Professional Development Award if they are waiting to hear on their acceptance to a program, internship, or conference. Award checks will be held until the recipient confirms his or her placement or acceptance into a program.

Awards may be considered taxable income to parents or to students who have “independent” financial aid status. Special tax rules, which vary by country, may apply to international students.
