German Studies M.A. and Germanic Languages & Literatures Ph.D.

*PLEASE NOTE:  The Department of German Studies has suspended matriculation for the 2018-2019 Academic Year and will not be considering applications until further notice.  If you wish to be notified when the application queue is reopened, please contact Graduate Academic Advisor, Aley Pennington.

Building on the M.A. foundational base, the The Ph.D. in Germanic Languages & Literatures program encourages students to develop their particular intellectual interests in collaboration with KU faculty and their areas of specialization.  The program offers students diverse coursework, opportunities for scholarly research and professional development, and pedagogical training. The graduate program focuses on the following areas:

  • German literature
  • Germanic linguistics/philology
  • German second-language acquisition/applied linguistics

Ph.D. students studying literature and culture and those studying Germanic philology also benefit from the opportunity to choose a minor field of study. Students may choose a minor of up to 9 credit hours of coursework taken outside the department and chosen in consultation with their dissertation advisor. This minor may also consist of coursework combined with a project.

The Doctoral Program Profile (PDF) gives a retrospective overview of our time-to-degree and other statistics relevant to the graduate program and graduate-student experience.
