Awards, Honors, Scholarships, Financial Aid

The Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures values the academic and co-curricular achievements of its outstanding undergraduate students. Recipients of the following awards are honored at our Recognition Ceremony, held each May during Commencement weekend.

Undergraduate Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement

2017 Recipient: Courtney Frets (BA German Studies, May 2017)

Courtney was selected for this award for her stellar performance in her German Studies courses; she participated actively in class discussion and produced written work of very high quality on topics such as her autobiography as a learner of German to the future colonization of Mars to deception in the Enlightenment drama Emilia Galotti. She impressed her audience at the Undergraduate Research Symposium with her analysis of a German novel, set in the historical and cultural context of a divided Germany. Highly skilled at literary analysis, Courtney brought a high level of critical thinking to her work in the senior capstone course.

Undergraduate Award for Outstanding Service to the Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures

2017 Recipient: Drew Crist (BS Math and Economics, May 2017)

Drew served as Student Assistant at the Max Kade Center for three years. He performed his duties without fail. He did a lot of heavy lifting, literally: transporting boxes of books from Wescoe to the MKC and moving collections within the building. He continued the work of cataloging collections housed at the Center. Drew started as a German Studies major but then decided to complete a double major in Mathematics and Economics; he has also earned an Undergraduate Certificate in the University Honors Program. He spent a year studying in Germany before coming to KU and completed a business internship in Germany.
