Name: Philip Mueller
Hometown: Freeport, Illinois
Major: Visual Communication BA (Graphic Design) Minor: German

“My mother’s side of my family stems from Germany and still speak German regularly. When I was young my mother taught me how to speak German and we have visited family in Europe a few times. When I came to KU I thought it would be a great opportunity to continue learning and expanding on my German.”

Name: Yasmine Adrian
Hometown: Arlington, Virginia
Major(s)/Minor(s): Global and International Studies and German Studies Double Major

“Back in eighth grade I stared at my German homework and thought I would never learn to speak fluently, not to mention study it at university. Then I went to a conference in Austria and met trilingual children, who inspired me to continue learning German. Now I feel excitement at my ability to understand and participate in conversations all auf Deutsch! German is a beautiful language and I hope to one day work in Germany or Austria and speak German every day. Languages are challenging to learn, but there is nothing like the thrill of realizing that something finally clicks and a whole world opens up before you.”

Name: Faith Hofaker
Hometown: Logan, Kansas
Major: Biology BA PreMed Minor: German

“Having been taught German in high school by my uncle, I quickly developed a love for the language and the culture, and I was not willing to part with it in college. Even though it wasn’t the traditional path for premedical students, I decided to minor in German - and I have not regretted it in the slightest. Some of my favorite memories came from my time at the German Summer Language Institute in Holzkirchen, and I still get keep in touch with my host parents.”

Name: Andrew Brabant
